Hey,
“Everything in moderation.”
You've probably heard it a thousand times.
And on the surface, it sounds sensible.
But there's a problem:
You can't have moderation without discipline.
Moderation isn't the absence of discipline.
Moderation IS discipline.
Think about what moderation actually requires.
It means having the discipline to say:
"I'm going to have one."
Not the whole packet.
"I'm going to stop here."
Not "just one more."
"I'm not going to have it today."
Even though you want it.
That's discipline.
And if you don't have the ability to stop yourself, telling yourself to "just have everything in moderation" can actually keep you trapped.
Because you end up in the same cycle:
Lose weight → relax → gain weight → diet → lose weight → relax → gain weight.
Over and over again.
And you keep telling yourself:
"This time I'll just be more moderate."
But moderation requires you to do something you haven't consistently demonstrated that you can do yet:
Stop.
So instead of obsessing over moderation, I want you to focus on something much more fundamental:
Keep your word to yourself.
Pick your principles.
For example:
Drink your water.
Move regularly.
Eat whole foods.
No snacking.
No fast food.
No liquid sugars.
And then stick to them.
Not because you're trying to be perfect.
Because you're teaching yourself:
"When I say I'm going to do something, I do it."
And if Monday to Sunday feels too difficult right now, simplify it.
Make a rule:
Monday–Friday: I stick to my principles.
Saturday and Sunday can be more relaxed.
But here's the important part:
Don't negotiate with yourself Monday–Friday.
Because every time you say you're going to do something and then break your own rule, you're teaching yourself that your own promises are optional.
And that's a dangerous habit.
Discipline isn't some magical personality trait that you're either born with or you're not.
Discipline is doing what you said you were going to do — especially when you don't feel like doing it.
And once you build that?
Moderation becomes much easier.
Because now you trust yourself to stop.
Don't chase moderation before you've built discipline.
Build the discipline first.
